When it comes to skateboarding, every little piece of your setup plays a unique role. It's no surprise that decks, trucks, and wheels typically get most of the attention, but if you ask me, bearings are the unsung heroes of any setup. Speed and smoothness matter! And we can thank our bearings for both.
So, with that said, I compiled seven bearings that I personally feel stand out for their speed, durability and precision. Take a look:
Bones Swiss Bearings
If you’ve been in skateboarding for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard the hype around Bones Swiss Bearings. Duh! These things are the cream of the crop, no argument. Sure, they're expensive (usually around $80) as far as bearings are concerned, but one set just might last you, well, forever! We're talking premium, Swiss-made construction. Think of it as an investment purchase. These are built to last and perform from Day 1 through infinity.
The cream of the crop
Bones Reds Bearings
For skaters looking for quality on a budget, Bones Reds are the go-to choice. And just for the record, these are my all-time favorite bearings. There's not a skate shop in the world that isn't carrying Reds, and for good reason! These bearings are affordable (typically $20), super reliable, and always get the job done. They're easy to clean, too, and provide a long lifespan as long as you care for them. Doesn't matter if you're a beginner, a self-proclaimed hometown hero or anywhere in between. Reds rule. They even come with a free sticker!

My personal favs
Bronson G3 Bearings
Bronson Speed Co. Has been making waves in the bearing game for quite a while now—from their team to their videos to their bearings themselves—and their G3 Bearings are a fan favorite amongst local skate shops across the globe. The G3s feature "deep groove raceways" that help prevent side impact damage, high-speed ceramic oil for reduced friction, and micro-groove surfaces that distribute lubricant evenly. But what does it all mean!? Simply put—they're faster, smoother and more durable than your average bearing. Just take one look at their team. Enough said.
Fast enough for Delfino!
Bronson 'Raw' Bearings
Are you one of those skateboarders who likes to pop off their bearing shields? Are you into raw speed and a unique feel? Bronson 'Raw' Bearings might just be what you're looking for. Unlike traditional bearings, these come shieldless, which many skaters will tell you reduces friction and makes them extra responsive. They still feature a coated raceway that repels dirt and moisture, but man, the sound these make can only be heard without a shield. Plenty of skaters think it's a crazy concept, sure, but plenty of others swear by Bronson Raws. I'll let you decide!
No shields, no problem.
SKF 'Oski Pro' Bearings
Did you know SKF has one of the heaviest teams in skateboarding? Louie Lopez, Ishod Wair, Tiago Lemos, Kader Sylla, Alexis Sablone, Beatrice Domond, and as we see here, Oskar 'Oski' Rozenberg. Boom.
Another fun fact—they've been a respected bearing manufacturer in the industrial world since 1907! But yeah, I'd say their entrance into skateboarding was met with a red carpet hosting a squad like that.
The 'Oski Pro' Bearings are just one of the many fine bearings SKF offers. Their precision engineering and use of high-quality steel give these bearings a serious edge in the skateboarding world. Look for 'em at your local!

Pure precision
Modus Ceramic Bearings
When someone mentions "ceramic" bearings, they're usually referring to the fact that they're a bit more lightweight, super fast and assist with reducing friction. And I'd say Modus Ceramic Bearings are among the best in the game. Also, unlike typical steel ball bearings, ceramic balls are harder, smoother (and supposedly more heat-resistant), meaning they last longer and don't need much maintenance. Similar to Bones Swiss, these are certainly on the higher end of the price spectrum, but also similar to Bones Swiss, the performance they provide make them a proper investment.
Another one of my personal favs
Independent GP-B Bearings
Independent is obviously known in the skate world for its trucks, but its bearings are strong and dependable. They're also a little easier on your wallet compared to most of the others on this list. Indy's GP-B Bearings live up to their reputation nonetheless and are built for rugged durability. Like their trucks, these bearings are perfect for skaters who are on a mission to put their setups through a beating. And like most of the bearings on this list, I'd say every skate shop out there is most likely carrying these gems.
Fast, durable and a little easier on your wallet
Hey, bearings might be small, but they play a huge role in how your board feels. Looking for speed? Long-lasting durability? An affordable upgrade? Well, there’s clearly a set of bearings out there for you. All I can say is head down to your local skate shop, feast your eyes on that glass case, and take your pick!
